How do I reserve a space for my bike?

• Bikes travel free on most UK trains

• Some operators require a bike reservation

SNCF

• 🔧 Dismantled / folded bike

• Allowed free of charge on all SNCF trains in France if in a cover ≤ 130 × 90 cm.

• 🚲 Non-dismantled bike – TER

• Allowed free of charge on most TER

• Space limited, no reservations

• Access may be refused in peak times for safety/capacity
  ⚠ Some regions require a mandatory bike reservation (TER websites only)

• 🚲 TGV & Intercités (reservation required)

• Limited bike spaces available

• If your TGV/Intercités offers a bike spot, Trainline shows an optional bike space (10 €)

• Must be purchased to board with a non-dismantled bike

• Cannot be added after booking

 OUIGO

• 🚲 Foldable bike (in cover)

• Select “vélo sous housse” (or equivalent option)

• Up to 30 min before departure

• Cost: 5 €

• Conditions: cover ≤ 130 × 90 cm, ≤ 30 kg

• 🚲 Non-foldable bike

• Option “Place vélo” required

• Cost: 10 €

• Max 2 bikes per train, subject to availability

• Available only on OUIGO Train Classique

TGV Lyria

• Only dismantled bikes allowed (wheels removed)

• Must be in a cover ≤ 130 × 90 cm

• Assembled bikes not permitted

Renfe

• AVE, Long Distance, Avant

• Must be folded/disassembled in 120 × 90 × 40 cm cover

• < 180 cm total → hand luggage

• 180 cm → special luggage (Bicycle Extra via Renfe)

• Pedals removed, handlebars at 90°

• Some Alvia/Intercity (Galicia) require a free bike ticket

• Media Distancia, Cercanías, Feve

• Folding bikes → no Bicycle Extra needed

• Assembled bikes:

  • 1 per person

  • Must buy Bicycle Extra with Renfe

  • Media Distancia: 3 € supplement for >100 km (spaces limited)

• ⚠ Electric scooters: not allowed on any Renfe trains.

AVLO

• Must be folded, in a cover

• Small cabin size: 55 × 35 × 25 cm (free)

• Large cover: 85 × 60 × 35 cm or 180 cm total → add extra luggage (10 €)

 Renfe–SNCF

• Only folded/disassembled bikes in a cover ≤ 120 × 90 cm

OUIGO Spain

• Folded/disassembled in cover ≤ 120 × 90 cm, ≤ 30 kg

• Requires OUIGO Plus (9 €)

• Can be added later via Mis Reservas (+5 € fee)

Iryo

• Only disassembled bikes in a closed bag/case

• Count as luggage (must meet size limits)

• Scooters (any type) not allowed

Cercanías

• Bikes travel free

• 1 per person

• Must be placed in designated bike areas

• Traveller is responsible for loading/unloading and ensuring the bike does not block doorways or aisles

Trenitalia

• Intercity & Regional trains

• Assembled bikes can be added during booking (small supplement)

• Fully closed folding bikes travel free if ≤ 120 × 80 × 45 cm

• Frecce trains

• 1 bike free if:

• dismantled in a bike bag, or

• fully closed folding bike
  Max size: 80 × 110 × 45 cm

• International trains

• Some allow bikes with a seat reservation + bike ticket

• For non-folding bikes → check with Trenitalia before booking

Italo

• Folded bikes only, fully closed in a bike bag, stored in luggage areas

Arenaways

• Very limited bike spaces → contact operator directly

Deutsche Bahn (DB)

• Bike rules vary by service and region

• A bike ticket or reservation may be required

 Denmark – DSB

• Folding bikes: allowed if stored in luggage racks and not blocking aisles

• Assembled bikes: require a reservation → contact DSB directly

Netherlands – NS

• Folding bikes: allowed if stored properly

• Assembled or disassembled bikes:

  • Require a Fietskaart Dal bike ticket

  • Allowed only in off-peak hours, weekends, or July–August

  • Remove panniers/luggage before boarding

 Austria – ÖBB

• Bikes allowed on most local & long-distance trains with a bike ticket

• Prices vary by point of purchase

• Weekly/monthly bike passes also available

• For reservations or international bike tickets → contact ÖBB directly

🚌Ouibus

• Bikes cannot be stored in the luggage hold (folded or assembled)

Switzerland – SBB

• Bikes allowed with a valid bike ticket

• Reservations mandatory from March to October

• Buy bike tickets/reservations in stations or directly with SBB

Belgium – SNCB

• Folding bikes: allowed

• Assembled bikes: require a Bike Ticket (buy in station or via SNCB)
